Meeting Objectives
The University of Mississippi Office for Research and Economic Development (ORED) facilitates impactful collaborations to drive applied research and innovation that serves Mississippi and beyond. Key areas of focus for SEUS-CP:
- Energy and Natural Resources: The University has seen an increase in applied research around energy, natural resources, and resilience. From novel fuels and storage to infrastructure, ethics, and policy, this is a burgeoning focus area that leverages unique assets at the university such as the Mississippi Mineral Resource Institute, National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering, and Center for Graphene Research and Innovation. The applications of this work range from alternative fuels and storage to battery applications, mobility, and sourcing.
- Aerospace and Defense: The University has a longstanding history of research and talent development for the aerospace and defense industry. The National Center for Physical Acoustics is one of UM’s landmark research programs with a wide-range of military and civilian applications, such as noise reduction in jet propulsion and analysis of noise from ballistic missile launches, to drone noise assessment and evaluation of acoustic interactions in combustion and chemical processes. The Center for Air and Space Law is the only one of its kind and a global leader in policy development and legal education, while researchers in energy, nanomaterials, and artificial intelligence are exploring emerging technologies and their applications to this critical sector. A destination educational program, the Center for Manufacturing Excellence partners with industry to develop innovative advanced methods for manufacturing and the next generation of engineering and manufacturing talent.
- Natural Products and Cannabis: an internationally renowned research center, The National Center for Natural Products Research has a dedicated team of multidisciplinary experts who are leading innovation in natural products and are committed to advancing the science of natural products, delivering impactful solutions for human health, agrochemical development and responsible insect management. As regulations around medical and recreational applicants evolve, The National Center for Cannabis Research and Education was established in 2024 to foster and conduct scientific research, data analysis, education and training on the health effects of cannabis to aid in policymaking and outreach as programs emerge.
